THE ARTIST

Michelle Luyt

Michelle Luyt was born in 1992 in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa. She started Minx Ceramics after receiving her Master’s in Ceramic Design at the Nelson Mandela University in 2018.

Inspired by the natural world around her and a love for doodling, she explores the surface of her forms by means of abstract design.

Minx Ceramics are funky, handmade items that consist of both functional and decorative ware, that range from brightly painted surfaces to smoke fired effects.

INSPIRATION

DoodlingProcess

My main source of inspiration comes from doodling.

I use doodling as a method to create absentmindedly which leads me to discover the endless possibilities of design that were unthinkable at the time of creation. It allows me to escape and tap into my subconscious where I believe all creativity is born.

I began doodling with pen on paper which allowed me to create abstract imagery that was very intricate and complex.

I later started using this process in my ceramics when constructing forms and decorating the surface of the clay.
